Building Blocks: Part 1 – Starting Points

Through this series of posts, I hope to describe a few ideas that I think are useful for nearly anyone in any circumstance. The main idea is reexamination of basic fundamentals, or “building blocks”, where improvements can be leveraged for impact in many focus areas. While examining these building blocks, I’ll add in my own perspective on how some modifications or personalizations have yielded some benefits.

Yet another new start

With a new year beginning, I think back to the year that concluded. There’s some small things and some big things that I’m aiming to change. In mid-2017, I recall writing that I would be writing a weekly blog post for 2017, and unfortunately, that effort did not follow through. Though I could make one excuse or another (a topic I plan to write about shortly), I instead am restating my goal of a post per week for 2018 – more to come soon! I’m looking forward to the opportunity to write about various quirky insights, (semi-)thoughtful commentaries, and entertaining lists as the year unfolds.

Here’s 10 big questions

Sometime last year, I realized that there’s many big questions that have passed through my mind that I couldn’t say I had a good answer to. For instance, I used to be asked (in my younger days) “What do you want to be when you grow up?”, but a more relevant question for me now is “what job/role are you going to have in 10 years?”.

5 Topics that school doesn’t teach

As much as I appreciate what I’ve been able to learn through a standardized education, there’s many crucial components of real world living that are largely absent from a typical curriculum. I find it somewhat ironic how learning physics and mathematics at a high level can look great on a resume, but that knowledge doesn’t provide much assistance for getting through an average day. So after you’ve gotten book smart (or better, before), it’s time to bring those street smarts up to par. Here’s a few key interest areas that I focused on when I had to start living life without a syllabus.
